# Consistent background AI images: one scene, every shot

Why the room changes between AI photos while the model stays the same, and how to save one scene and reuse it for every product in your set.

_October 21, 2026. Written with AI from the sources listed below, and checked automatically before it went live._

To keep the same background across AI images, save the scene once and use it again for every shot. Write down the surface, the wall, the light and the camera angle, and don't describe the room from scratch each time. The face and the product usually stay the same because you gave the tool a photo of each. The room drifts because it only exists as words.

This post explains why that happens and what to pin down in a scene. It also shows how to save a scene in Icarus and use it on every product. You'll see what to do in a tool that can't save scenes, and how to check a finished set before it goes live.

**Key takeaways**

- The room changes because the tool builds it from your words again for every shot.
- Describe the scene in specific words: surface, backdrop, light direction, camera height.
- Save that scene once and pick it for every product, so you never retype it.
- Lay the finished set side by side and check the light and camera angle before you publish.

## Why does the room change when the model stays the same?

Every new shot starts from your brief. A photo of your model's face or your product gives the tool something fixed to copy. A room described only as "bright kitchen, morning light" gives it nothing fixed. The tool pictures a new kitchen each time. Your words stay the same while the counter, the window and the shadows change.

The companies that make these models say so in their own docs. [OpenAI's image guide](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/guides/image-generation) notes that its model can sometimes struggle to keep recurring characters or brand elements looking the same from one image to the next. Your background is a brand element. Say your shop page shows twelve products in twelve slightly different kitchens. It looks like twelve separate shoots, and buyers notice even when they can't say what's wrong.

In Icarus, face locking keeps the person the same, and [product pinning](https://withicarus.com/features/exact-product) keeps your real product's colour, logo and stitching. The room needs its own fix: a saved scene.

## What makes two backgrounds look the same?

Two shots look like one shoot when a few things match. Before you save a scene, decide each of these and write it in one plain sentence:

![Three colored ceramic mugs on an oak table by a sage-green wall, lit from a window on the left](https://icarus.b-cdn.net/blog/consistent-background-ai-images/mugs-on-oak-table-sage-wall.png)

- **The surface.** An oak table, a white marble slab, a linen sheet. Name the material and its colour.
- **The backdrop.** A plain sage-green wall, a cream paper sweep, a blurred shelf. Say what sits behind the product.
- **The light.** Where it comes from and how warm it is. "One large window on the left, soft morning light, shadows falling to the right" holds far better than "natural light".
- **The camera.** Eye level or looking down, close up or with space around the product. A flat lay and a side view never match, whatever the room.
- **The props.** Use only a few. Every extra prop is one more thing that can move, change or disappear between shots.

Vague words drift and specific words hold. If a photographer couldn't set up the scene from your sentence alone, the AI won't build it the same way twice either.

## How to save one scene and reuse it for every product

Icarus saves your scene as a [studio](https://withicarus.com/features/brand-studios). A studio stores the light, the background, the mood and the framing, and you can pick it in any shot. You write the scene once and never type it again.

1. Make a studio and describe its setting in plain words. Use the sentences you wrote above.
2. Test it with one product. Make a few shots, keep the one you like, and tighten the studio's wording until the room looks right.
3. In your next shot, open Elements and pick your studio.
4. Tag your saved product and generate. The product appears in that scene.
5. Repeat for every product, or do the whole range at once with [bulk product photos](https://withicarus.com/features/bulk-product-photos). Bulk makes one shot per line, and each line has its own prompt and products. Pick the same studio for all of them.

Add a saved model to the same shots, and face locking keeps one person across the range, in the same room.

You see each shot's price before you make it. On the model Icarus starts you on, a 1K image costs $0.04 when it holds a saved product. Plans and top ups are on the [pricing page](https://withicarus.com/pricing).

## What if your tool has no saved scenes?

You can still keep the room steady. It just takes more care with every shot.

**Use a finished shot as the reference.** [OpenAI's guide](https://developers.openai.com/api/docs/guides/image-generation) says you can give it one or more images as a reference for a new image. Pick your best shot, give it to the tool as the background, and ask for the new product in that exact scene.

**Stay in one conversation.** [Google's Gemini docs](https://ai.google.dev/gemini-api/docs/image-generation) recommend multi-turn conversation for making changes to images. Once a shot looks right, ask for the next product in the same chat. Don't start a new one.

**Paste the same scene text, word for word.** Keep a scene paragraph in a note. For each new shot, change only the line that names the product. Even a small change, like "wooden table" in place of "oak table", can change the room.

Here's a scene paragraph you can copy and adapt:

> A ceramic mug on a light oak table against a plain sage-green wall. One large window on the left, soft morning light, gentle shadows falling to the right. Camera at table height, product centered with space around it. No other props.

Try this prompt in Icarus: https://withicarus.com/dashboard?prompt=A%20ceramic%20mug%20on%20a%20light%20oak%20table%20against%20a%20plain%20sage-green%20wall.%20One%20large%20window%20on%20the%20left%2C%20soft%20morning%20light%2C%20gentle%20shadows%20falling%20to%20the%20right.%20Camera%20at%20table%20height%2C%20product%20centered%20with%20space%20around%20it.%20No%20other%20props.

Swap the mug for your product and leave everything else alone.

## Check the set before you publish

A room that drifts is easier to spot in a grid than one image at a time. Put every shot from the set side by side at the same size and go through this list:

![Business owner comparing printed product photos laid side by side on a desk to check the backgrounds match](https://icarus.b-cdn.net/blog/consistent-background-ai-images/owner-comparing-printed-product-photos.png)

_Made with Icarus_

- [ ] The surface is the same material and colour in every shot
- [ ] The wall or backdrop matches in colour and texture
- [ ] Shadows fall the same way, so the light comes from the same side
- [ ] The camera sits at the same height and distance
- [ ] No prop has appeared, moved or disappeared
- [ ] The product matches the real thing, logo and all

If a shot fails, make it again with the same saved scene. Don't try to edit around the problem.

Then check each image against the rules of every place you sell. For example, Google Merchant Center [requires images made with generative AI](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/6324350) to carry metadata saying they were AI-generated. It also [recommends images around 1500x1500 pixels or above](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/6324350?hl=en) for listings. Rules differ between platforms and change over time, so read the current ones before you upload.

To try this on your own range, save one scene in Icarus and run your products through it.

## Questions

### Why does my AI background change every time?

The tool builds the room from your words for each shot, and words leave room to guess. Name the surface, the backdrop, the light direction and the camera height. Then use that exact text, or a saved scene, for every shot.

### Can I use the same background for different products?

Yes. In Icarus, save the scene as a studio, then pick it and tag a different product in each shot. Every product goes into the same room.

### How do I keep the lighting the same across AI photos?

Say where the light comes from and how warm it is, for example a window on the left with soft morning light. Then check that the shadows fall the same way in every finished shot.

### Do AI product photos need a label?

It depends on where they appear. Google Merchant Center [requires AI-generated images](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/6324350) to carry metadata saying so. Check the rules of each place you sell.
