# Shopify product image size: what to export from AI photos

Shopify product images work best at 2048 x 2048 px, PNG or JPEG, under 20 MB. Here's what size to make AI photos at and how to export them.

_October 7, 2026. Written with AI from the sources listed below, and checked automatically before it went live._

Make your Shopify product images square, at 2048 x 2048 px, which is [the size Shopify says usually displays best for square images](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/product-media/product-media-types). Save them as PNG or JPEG, [the two file types Shopify recommends](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/product-media/product-media-types), and keep each file [smaller than 20 MB](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/product-media/product-media-types).

This post covers Shopify's limits and why the shape matters more than the exact pixel count. It also covers what most guides skip: if your photos come from an AI tool, what size to make them at, when to make them bigger, and how to check them before you upload.

## What size and file type does Shopify accept?

Shopify publishes a short list of limits for product and collection images. Here they are in one place.

| Setting | What Shopify says |
| --- | ---: |
| Largest image | 5000 x 5000 px (25 megapixels) |
| Largest file | under 20 MB |
| Best size for square images | 2048 x 2048 px |
| Best file type | PNG, then JPEG |

The 2048 figure is a recommendation, not a hard rule. Shopify will take any image that stays inside the 5000 px and 20 MB limits. But 2048 square gives you enough detail for zoom on a product page without huge files, so it's the number to aim for.

PNG keeps every detail and suits flat colours and clean edges. JPEG makes smaller files and suits photos with soft light and texture. For most product photos either works. Pick one and use it across your catalog.

## Why every product image should be the same shape

The exact pixel size matters less than you'd think. The shape matters more.

Shopify says you need [a consistent aspect ratio for all your featured images](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/product-media/product-media-types) if you want them to display at the same size. Mix tall, wide and square main images and your collection pages look ragged, with cards of different heights side by side.

So choose one shape and use it for every main image. Square is the easy choice: it matches the size Shopify recommends, and it crops well on phones and in social posts.

You also don't need to export a separate file for every spot on your store. Shopify [makes several sizes from each image you add](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/product-media/product-media-types), one for each part of your theme. It also [picks the best format the shopper's browser can show](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/product-media/product-media-types) and serves that. Your job is one clean, large, square file per photo. Shopify handles the rest.

## What size to ask an AI tool for

If you make product photos with AI, decide the shape and size before you make anything. Resizing a finished set into a new shape later means cropping off parts of your product.

Ask for a square frame in your brief, every time. Then make the image at a larger setting, so you have pixels to spare and can resize down to 2048 cleanly. Shrinking a big image keeps it sharp. Stretching a small one makes it soft.

In Icarus, an image is made at 1K unless you pick another size. For Shopify, pick 2K or 4K:

- 2K costs $0.03 an image, or $0.05 when it holds a saved product.
- 4K costs $0.09 an image, or $0.11 when it holds a saved product.

A 40-product catalog at 2K with your saved product in each shot works out as 40 images at $0.05, which comes to $2.00. If you want 4K product and outdoor shoots that stay consistent across a set, pick GPT Image 2 from the model list. It starts from $0.02 an image.

A brief can be as plain as this:

> A white ceramic mug on a pure white background, soft even studio light, front view at eye level, square frame, the whole mug in shot with space around it

Try this prompt in Icarus: https://withicarus.com/dashboard?prompt=A%20white%20ceramic%20mug%20on%20a%20pure%20white%20background%2C%20soft%20even%20studio%20light%2C%20front%20view%20at%20eye%20level%2C%20square%20frame%2C%20the%20whole%20mug%20in%20shot%20with%20space%20around%20it

Leave some empty space around the product. It gives you room to crop to an exact square without cutting off a handle or a strap. Once the image is downloaded, check its pixel size before you do anything else.

## When the image is too small, make it bigger first

Some photos arrive small: an old supplier shot, a crop from a phone photo, or a 1K image you liked too much to remake. If one side is under 2048 px, make it bigger before you resize it into a square.

Don't drag the corners in a basic photo editor. That spreads the same pixels further apart and the image goes blurry, which shoppers notice the moment they zoom.

Icarus can [make a photo bigger and sharper](https://withicarus.com/upscale), to 4K, from a PNG, JPEG or WEBP. Making a photo sharper and bigger costs from $0.03. Once the image is larger than you need, shrink it down to 2048 square. Look closely at labels, logos and fine print on the result, the way you'd check any retouched photo.

## From AI image to Shopify upload, step by step

Here's the full path from a made image to a live product page.

1. Make the image square, at 2K or 4K, with space around the product.
2. Check the pixel size of the file you downloaded.
3. If either side is under 2048 px, make it bigger first.
4. Drop it into the [product image resizer](https://withicarus.com/tools/product-image-resizer), pick where it's going, and get a square JPEG on pure white, under the file size limit.
5. Run the result through the [product image requirements checker](https://withicarus.com/tools/marketplace-image-requirements) to see the size, file type, file size and background, and what to fix.
6. Upload it to Shopify and look at it on your live store, on a phone and on a laptop.

If you also send your products to Google Shopping, keep the same file under both limits. Google Merchant Center accepts [no image file larger than 16MB](https://support.google.com/merchants/answer/6324350), so one export that clears 16MB clears Shopify's 20 MB too.

Before you publish a new set, tick these off:

- [ ] Every main image is the same shape
- [ ] Each file is 2048 x 2048 px or close to it
- [ ] Files are PNG or JPEG
- [ ] Each file is under 16MB if you also list on Google
- [ ] The product's colour, logo and stitching match the real thing
- [ ] Zoom looks sharp on the live page

If you want to make your next set of product photos square and at 2K from the start, you can try it in Icarus.

## Questions

### What is the best image size for Shopify products?

Square images at 2048 x 2048 px, which [Shopify says usually display best](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/product-media/product-media-types). Use the same shape for every main image so your collection pages line up.

### What is the maximum image size on Shopify?

Product and collection images can be [as large as 5000 x 5000 px, or 25 megapixels](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/product-media/product-media-types). The file also has to be [smaller than 20 MB](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/product-media/product-media-types) to upload.

### Should I use PNG or JPEG for Shopify product images?

Shopify names [PNG as the best file type, followed by JPEG](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/product-media/product-media-types). PNG keeps clean edges, and JPEG makes smaller files for detailed photos, so either works if you stay consistent.

### Do I need to make different image sizes for my Shopify theme?

No. Shopify [creates different sizes automatically](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/product-media/product-media-types) for the different areas of your theme. Upload one large, square file per photo.

### What size should I make AI product photos for Shopify?

Make them square and larger than you need, then resize down to 2048 x 2048 px. In Icarus that means picking 2K or 4K, then checking the pixel size of the file before you upload it.
